Basics of Server & IT Management
IT & Server Management involves the process of keeping a server updated and running so that a computer network can operate smoothly as it is vital to the performance of the network. If IT & Server Maintenance is not conducted on a computer network, regardless of whether the network is small or large, application software usually will not run as well as expected. In some cases, a network may even experience total or partial network failure if proper maintenance is not conducted.
There are two types of IT & Server Maintenance procedures:
A Server Maintenance plan or SLA will also include a comprehensive backup plan. In the event of a system failure, the backup data will be vital in helping the network users retrieve their stored information. Depending on what kind of data is stored on a server, it may need to be backed up daily, weekly, monthly, or bi-monthly. A good backup plan will always be tested regularly to ensure that it will meet data recovery requirements.
IT Audit
An IT Audit requires several important steps. First, our administrators will conduct a thorough examination of the network, including checking server log files, hard disk space, folder permissions, and redundancy. This review usually also includes monitoring network temperature applications to ensure the server does not get too hot. If a machine overheats, for example, vital equipment like the central processing unit, memory, or motherboard can be impacted.
Security and application functionality will be examined as part of server maintenance. If required, security patches will be installed on individual computers within the network to ensure data is securely being maintained.
The security review should also include reading server logs for evidence of computer hacking attempts or security alerts. In addition, our administrators will ensure that antivirus software is updated on all of the computers in the network.
Server & Workstation Maintenance
IT Systems today are completely centralized and therefore complete reliance is placed on Servers. Servers require consistent maintenance to ensure they run at optimal performance on a daily basis. With a Digiworks SLA (Service Level Agreement) we set aside half an hour each day for assessments, backups and minor corrections during business hours. The SLA covers the following:
These are just a few of the features that the SLA has to offer.

Server Maintenance plan or SLA has been created by our technical manager. He is responsible for the implementation and support of all the physical servers and related equipment. As with all equipment, there is a specific list of scheduled maintenance that must occur to maintain both the warranty and the performance of the equipment.
There are three primary aspects to our server maintenance plan:
Scheduled Maintenance
Scheduled maintenance includes regular backup of data, refresh of key programs, and running diagnostic programs. This type of maintenance will be completed by our technical manager who has been specifically trained in the operating system and applications stored on the server. The server is connected to remotely or physically in order to complete scheduled maintenance. We take care to schedule this type of work outside of normal business hours to minimize the impact on daily operations.
In general, scheduled maintenance occurs once daily. Some systems may require more frequent maintenance, but this is often an indication of an overloaded system. In situations where funding is not available for the correct resources, the existing server is pushed to the limits of performance exceptions. In this situation, more frequent maintenance is often required.
Application of Patches
Our server maintenance plan will include the application of patches. A system patch is software provided by the manufacturer to address known issues. It is quite common for a system patch to address a security weakness, or development bug. In order for the technical manager to then apply the patch, the data on the server must be backed up, and then the server is taken offline. The patch is applied and then the server functionality is tested. Upon successful implementation of the patch, the data is restored to the server and it is returned to production.
Overall System Management
Overall system maintenance frequency varies, depending on the size of the organization, but is typically required at least once every calendar month. This part of the server maintenance plan is often scheduled around long weekends, when demand for system processes is expected to drop. Part of this type of maintenance includes a complete backup of all systems and related data.
